ℹ️ About Electrum
About Electrum Electrum is a free, open-source, self-custodial Bitcoin wallet created by Thomas Voegtlin in November 2011 and maintained by Electrum Technologies GmbH in Berlin, Germany.
The lightweight SPV client connects to decentralized Electrum servers that index the Bitcoin blockchain, eliminating the need to download the full chain while still verifying transactions through Simplified Payment Verification and Merkle proofs.
Electrum supports Lightning Network payments, multisignature wallets with up to 15 cosigners, two-factor authentication via TrustedCoin, hardware wallet integration with Ledger, Trezor, and Coldcard, and offline cold storage through watching-only wallets.
The wallet encrypts private keys with AES-256 using a PBKDF2-derived key from the user's password, and all keys remain exclusively on the user's device under the MIT-licensed codebase with reproducible builds.
Users manage Bitcoin via desktop clients for Windows, macOS, and Linux, or the Android mobile app, while developers contribute through the public GitHub repository with over 350 contributors and 8,000+ stars.
Electrum's decade-plus track record, zero-downtime server architecture, and advanced coin-control features make it a strategic Bitcoin self-custody tool for privacy-focused individuals and technically proficient holders worldwide.
